🌼 My Tax Season Checklist

(Simple Steps for a Smooth Filing Experience)

Tax season doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a little preparation and a clear plan, you can stay organized, avoid unnecessary delays, and make the entire process much easier to manage.

This simple checklist walks you through the key steps to take before filing, during the filing process, and after  your return had been submitted — so you can move through tax season with confidence.

If you’re just getting started, you may also find my article 5 Simple Ways to Get Ready for Tax Season helpful.

Before You File

1. Gather All Your Tax Documents

Before preparing your return, make sure you have everything you need. This may include:

W‑2 forms

1099‑NEC

1099‑K (if applicable)

1099‑INT or 1099‑DIV

1098‑T or 1098‑E

Any other income or deduction documents

Missing documents can  delay your return or trigger IRS notices later.

2. Verify Your Personal Information

Even small errors can slow down processing.

Double-check:

Your name (exactly as it appears on your Social Security card)

Social Security numbers for you and your dependents

Your date of birth

Your current mailing address

Even one incorrect digit can cause delays.

3. Review Your Banking Information

If you’re requesting direct deposit, make sure your bank details are accurate.

Confirm:

Routing number

Account number

Account type (checking or savings)

If your bank rejects the deposit, the IRS will usually mail a paper check instead.

4. Decide How You’ll File

E-Filing is typically the fastest and most reliable way to submit your return.

Paper returns often take longer to process and are more likely to cause delays.

While You’re Filing

5. Enter All Income Accurately

Make sure every income form is included.

The IRS compares your return with employer and financial records — missing income can trigger delays or notices.

6. Check Your Credits and Deductions

Review any credits or deductions you may qualify for, such as:

Earned Income Tax Credit

Child Tax Credit

Education credits

Retirement contributions

Itemized deductions (if applicable)

Accuracy matters here — incorrect claims can delay processing.

7. Double‑Check for Errors

Before submitting, review your return carefully.

Check:

Filing status

Dependent information

Math accuracy

Signatures (if paper filing)

A quick review can prevent weeks of delays.

After You File

8. Track Your Refund

Use the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool to check your status.

You’ll see:

Return Received

Refund Approved

Refund Sent

9. Watch for IRS Notices

If the IRS needs more information, they’ll send a letter.

Responding quickly helps keep your return moving forward.

10. Keep Copies of Everything

Save copies of:
• Your filed tax return
• All tax forms and documents
• Any IRS letters
• Direct deposit details

Good recordkeeping makes next year much easier.
